Description
Irish Silk Picture Stevengraph Monasterboice c1900 Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album Click to View Image Album An exceptionally RARE handwoven silk picture or stevengraph. Mounted and framed on a cardboard mount. "This picture is not printed. It is hand-woven on an old-style Jacquard Loom in the weaver's own home. Over 2,000 threads of pure silk are used in the process". Pádraic Breathnach, 15 Sr. Hamilton, Áth Cliath, Éire" - (Patrick Walsh, 15 Hamilton Street, Dublin, Ireland). This above information was printed on the reverse of a similar card from this collection. Quote from an Irish Year Book 1909 - under The Irish Poplin Industry - "......great skill and care was necessary, owing to the fact that each thread must be worked in its allocated position and in its proper order, otherwise the product would be imperfect. When figures are required the simple 'harness' is replaced by a more complicated one, worked by a Jacquard machine. The design is transferred to perforated cards which by passing through the machine, controlled the movement of the warp, and so reproduced the pattern in the cloth. From the foregoing it will be seen that labour forms a large proportion of the costs of Irish poplin, and as industries which give a lot of employment are a benefit to the country, we owe it as a patriotic duty to support such as we have". Silk has been manufactured in Dublin for over 200 years and owes its introduction to the Hugenots who fled from France in 1685, many of whom were skilled weavers and established themselves in Dublin as well as in several parts of England. Monasterboice Monasterboice is in County Louth. The Monastery which was founded by Saint Buite, who died in 521 AD, contains two of the finest High Crosses inIreland, both of these Crosses are made of sandstone and date to around the 9th century. The site also has a round tower, which is in excellent condition. The Cross of Muiredach, west face, pictured on the right, gets its name from an inscription at the base of the west face, saying it was erected by Muiredach. The cross is around 5.2 metres high. The theme of the cross is Christ the King, Lord of the Earth. Below is a detail from the bottom of the west face showing Christ being mocked by Roman soldiers We believe that this picture is a RARE AND ONCE OFF item as the cost of producing it at the time would have been prohibitive.
