Description
Pen and Brown Ink Drawing with gray wash ober pencil lines by Carlo Bibiena (1728-1787). Prov. F Dorling Hamburg. Auction no. 90 (bid sent June 3rd, 1977)Rec' July 29,1977 and matted on this date by Waite Collecions Director P. Waite. opera settings ( in Bibiena, Galli da, family ) Carlo Galli Bibiena (1728–87), son of Giuseppe, was born in Vienna. This last of the theatrical Bibienas traveled farther than any. He worked in Germany, France, and the Netherlands (1746–60); London (1763); Naples (1772), where he published five opera sets; Stockholm (1774); and St. Petersburg, Russia, until 1778. He died in Florence. From Britannica. Waite collections research. See Scholz, Baroque and Romantic Stage design, New York, 1950, plate no.41, for a drawing of a hall with colonade by Carlo Bibiena in pen, brown ink, and gray wash (as in this drawing) and compare the style, pen lines, shading, etc.... Bibiena used the same perspective view point in both of these drawings as well, complete to the same horizontal line runnig along the base of the drawing with small penned "astericks", or points on this line. Two on this drawing, one the Scholz example (vanishing points!) Waite collections The first drawing is full sze 7 3/4 by 11 1/2 inches. The next drawing is slightly enlarged for detail The third picture is again enlarged. The forth picture shows about 50% of the drawing. And the last picture shows the signature This is a very fine example of Italian drawings from the mid 1700's.
