Each drawing is signed "K. F." lower right hand.Karl Fortess studied under Yasuo Kuniyoshi as part of the Woodstock School. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League.His work is Modernist with a touch of Surrealism. This style often gives his subject a dreamlike or melancholy look--as it does in this painting. Fortess's works has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum, Woodstock Art Association, Boston Art Museum, and Carnegie Institute. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946 and many other juried prizes. Fortess worked as a WPA artist and taught at a variety of institutions, His work can now be found in the Brooklyn Museum, the National Museum of American Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, as well as many other collections both public and private.
