Description
LARGE c1880 NEW YORK LANDSCAPE MILL OIL by RITTER -LIST   " Expansive New York Landscape with Grist Mill and Hiker " Original oil on stretched canvas by Paul Ritter:( German/American: 1829 - 1907 ): A thickly painted, richly colored oil landscape depicting a hiker strolling on a warm cloudy day towards a grist mill: circa 1880: canvas/image size: 22 inches by 36 inches: signed and inscribed lower left - " Paul Ritter - N.Y. ": canvas inscribed with title/verso - " Grist Mill - New York " ( see close up photo ): framed.  Paul Ritter was born in Nuremberg in 1829. He received his formal training at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art. In 1860, he settled in the United States and established a studio in Vermont where he painted the Green Mountain Range. He later traveled to North Conway, New Hampshire ( where he painted landscapes of the White Mountains ) to continue his studies and paint with the other artists he had met in Munich. He traveled and painted throughout the eastern United States and is known to have painted landscapes in New York. Influenced by Frederick Church's Andes paintings, Ritter joined a group of American artists on a trip to explore and paint in the Andes Mountains. In his later years he returned to Germany. In 1880 he won the prestigious Gold Medal in Painting at the Berlin Exposition. The University of Michigan Art Museum conserves his work as does the Berlin Art Museum and the Nuremburg Museum of Art. ( ref: Who Was Who in American Art: Falk: American Paintings: Schwarz: New Hampshire Scenery: Cambell: Benezit: Thieme Becker: Mallett: Index of Artists: Index of Artistic Biography ). NOTE: Compare my price with other Ritter sales - In the last five years most of Ritters' oils have sold in public auction in the $5,000 to $8,000 range: Exceptions include a damaged oil with cracking that sold at Alderfer Auction in 2006 for $2,900 and my oil, which, as a result of being very poorly illustrated in sickly overall green tones, went virtually unnoticed by serious eastern collectors when originally offered in auction. ( Actual value of my oil if presented in an East Coast auction house is conservatively about $5,000 ). NOTE: This work is in excellent condition: The oil is framed in a fine beaded classic style 18k gold leaf frame, also in excellent condition ( frame is newer than the oil, probably about 50 years old ): This work is fully guaranteed. professional art packing. andale andalesell Payment Options:   Credit Cards , Money Order/Cashiers Checks ,PayPal ,Personal Check Shipping Options:   Fixed Shipping Charges.
