The city and it's surrounding area became his subject matter and, on his 60th birthday, he was honored by Berlin's mayor as "the artistic glorifier of the capital", to much acclaim from Berlin's inhabitants. As well as a masterful painter in OILS, Ury was also a MASTER of the PASTEL TECHNIQUE and was able to paint superb depictions of LIGHT and REFLECTION in this medium. It is this technique that is readily apparent in our LESSER URY ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE, below, of a RIVER with trees and clouds REFLECTED in its waters. Rendered by hand entirely in COLORED PASTELS this early work by Lesser Ury is not dated but, from the age of the paper and the drawing style, is estimated to be from the EARLY 1900s (his later work grew to be more precise and controlled). This earlier pastel is wonderfully EXPRESSIONISTIC, almost IMPRESSIONISTIC in its application. Ury's control of the light and the reflections at first appears casually easy, employing as he does some thick and heavy bursts of color on the paper--such is his mastery of the technique, which he continued to refine throughout his career. Unfortunately, Ury died a few weeks short of his 70th birthday in 1931. Drawn onto a thickish old brown paper, measuring: 9 3/4" x 7 1/4", blank on the verso. The pastel is SIGNED: L. Ury, in the lower left. Not dated, circa early 1900s. Condition is EXCELLENT, especially for the year, with just one very little edge-tear on the right paper edge and some general overall wear to the very edges of the paper only--NOT affecting the live picture area at all. A VERY FINE and VERY RARE Lesser Ury SIGNED older landscape in colored pastels.
