Description
Fernand Leger (1881-1955), La Racine Gris, Color Lithograph with Color Stencil and Pochoir, Signed, Documented and Numbered! ARTIST: Fernand Leger (1881-1955) TITLE: La Racine Gris MEDIUM: Color Lithograph with hand applied Color Stencil and Pochoir IMAGE SIZE: 19 ¼" x 25 ¼" (49 x 64 cm) SHEET SIZE: 25" x 35 ½" (63.5 x 90.2 cm) FRAMED SIZE: 37 ½" x 42 ¾" (95.3 x 108.6 cm) SIGNATURE: This work has a guaranteed authentic signature by Leger in ink in the lower right hand side of the work. EDITION: Numbered 121/250 in the lower left hand side of the work. CONDITION: This work is in great condition, with full margins and bright fresh colors! DISCUSSION: Brilliantly colored, this image represents an ongoing theme within Leger's body of work. In 1930 he began abstracting roots, tree trunks and other objects which commonly appear as dark central forms surrounded by fields of color. This work closely resembles a painting created by Leger in 1941 entitled Racine. Published by Editions Guy Spitzer, Paris, this work was printed on Arches wove paper. The publisher's blindstamp appears on the bottom right and his ink stamp appears on the reverse side of this work. Signed by the artist in ink in the lower right, this work is numbered 121/250 in the lower left. In this particular work the large overlapping forms give the composition weight and unify the separate images. Leger's use of color further energizes the piece by creating strong verticals, horizontals and diagonals. While one may attempt to assign meaning to the different planes of color, Leger avoids complete definition. The organic quality of the forms also adds a sense of movement to the work. The use of bright, primary blue, yellow and red stands out against vivid green, and burgundy along with contrasting black and white. PROVENANCE: Private Collection, New York DOCUMENTATION / COA: It is fully documented and referenced in (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work): 1) Saphire, Lawrence, Fernand Leger, The Complete Graphic Work, 1978, listed as cat no E 21 on pgs 290 and 291. ABOUT THE FRAMING: Conservation framed with archival materials and museum quality, this work is set in a robust scalloped gold leaf frame. The tone of the moulding accentuates the bright hues and contrasting darks in this piece. The sculptural quality of the framing compliments the weight and depth of this work. Completed with white linen wrapped mattes and a matching gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas cover. I. WHO IS MASTERWORKS FINE ART? II, QUESTIONS ABOUT BUYING FROM US?
