These photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe are printed on thick, coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi in Milan, Italy to produce the very highest standards. "Mapplethorpe" presents some of the photographer's finest and most representative images covering a breathtaking range of genres and subject matter: His early Polaroid work, male and female nudes, celebrity portraits, fashion and lifestyle shots, casual and experimental snapshots, and flower still lifes as well as a large variety of the "sex" pictures, which are Mapplethorpe's most daring and most influential work for which he is remembered for posterity. Mapplethorpe's contribution is twofold: He gave the European style of his predecessors a distinctively American inflection and he pushed the photographic exploration of sexuality as far as humanly possible, towards an unflinching sado-masochism that remains difficult to view and has lost none of its power to shock.
