Description
Minnie Evans (1892-1987) was a visionary, very idealistic, colorful North Carolina self-taught African American folk artist. She was born ito poverty and eventually found employment at an elegant estate: Pembroke Park. In 1948 she became a gatekeeper at Airlie Gardens where she found inspiration in the infinate diversity of color and shapes in the flowers and plants surrouding her. She began drawing her stunning mystical drawings at that time. Her days and dreams and visions where full of rich and beautiful flora and interests in mythical and biblical subjects. A true original, visionary artist, Minnie Evans only made about 1000 pieces which are in most major folk art museums and collections. This marvelous Organic Abstract shows many faces, or fragments of faces, many eyes-the longer you look the more you see. The colors are just so vivid and rich it is a joy to look at. It is very mysterious and yet very symmetrical. I find something so beautiful in Minnie Evans drawings, I can look at them literally for hours. Fortunately I have another but one has to go. I know this will be appreciated and enjoyed. The drawing is in graphite and crayon on thick paper cut out and displayed with signature. This piece is probably from the 40's, an early piece probably. Image is 12 x 8 1/2, floated and surrounded by a matt. Professionally Archival Framming measures 19 1/4 x 16. This is a really amazing piece, meditative and full of beauty. The colors of first and last pic are accurate, close-ups are lighter than actual color. Very deep colors. Will consider reasonable offers only.
