Description
Mihail Chemiakin watercolor and ink drawing. Drawn by the artist on two pieces of paper and mounted on black cardboard. Excellent condition. Signed and titled on bottom in Russian and dated "1984, N.Y." This unique piece of art is not a lithograph or multiple edition as often seen on EBAY. This is a one-of-a kind original drawing by an internationally renown artist whose paintings have sold for over $100,000 at major auction houses throughout the world. The image is 12 1/2 inches x 11 inches and the elegant frame is 28 inches x 26 inches. The colors in this piece are amazing and the detail is superb. This piece has been in my collection for over 20 years and came directly from the gallery in San Francisco that held a Chemiakin exhibition. The retail price is approx. $15-20,000. The artist indicates at the bottom of the piece (in Russian) that this is a sketch for his artistic production of Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." Chemiakin supervised the artistic production of a number of major ballets including "The Nutcracker Suite" and the "Firebird Suite." As such, this piece has significant historical value. Mihail Chemiakin was born in Moscow and grew up in occupied East Germany. He returned to Russia in 1957 where he was admitted to the Special High School of the Repin Academy of Art in Leningrad. He was expelled from art school for failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms, and from 1959-1971 worked as a laborer in various capacities. In 1967, the artist founded the St. Petersburg Group and developed the philosophy of Metaphysical Synthesism, dedicated to the creation of a new form of icon painting based on the study of religious art of all ages and peoples.
