DISCUSSION: Capturing our attention through the use of large bold vertical forms, this complex and dynamic work uses the power of color, composition, and a distinctive textural quality to convey energy and excitement. Utilizing a vigorous and energetic application to the plate with deep impression marks, Miró creates an image that combines stability with lively movement. With accents of bright yellow, blue and red, on a vivid black background, the vibrant hues guide our eyes around the piece, never stopping in one area-thereby maintaining the vigor and energetic quality of the work. This piece is perhaps best appreciated with its counter-piece, Llibre dels Sis Sentits II. While both works rely on the same plate size and compositional design, they maintain distinctive differences, namely the bright verses dark palates, making them balanced and harmonious as a pair. Strong plate marks, vivid color, a deeply saturated black background, and large scale combine in this monumental color etching and aquatint. In Llibre dels Sis Sentits V, Miro combines these characteristics to create a delightfully energetic and enjoyable piece. Created in 1981, this work is from a series of 6 color etchings and aquatints entitled, Llibre dels Sis Sentits (Book of the Six Senses), designed to compliment 6 poems by Miquel Marti i Pol. This work was printed by JJ Torralba, Rubi, Barcelona, and published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. The piece was printed on Guarro watermarked paper featuring the publisher's blindstamp in the lower left margin. Numbered 28/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, near the publisher's blindstamp. This work is also hand signed by Joan Miró (1893 - 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin.
