Description
This is a most gorgeous set of old, very old,  Norwegian candleholders, with original paint and decorations. It is a set of 3, each piece 10 3/4" by 8". They were painted by "Solhaug,St. Paul" and Solhaug was a student of Per Lysne, well know artist from Norway. With candle tapers in these, they would make an astounding mantel decoration or down the center of a long smorgasboard table, they would be awesome. You will love these and we will give FREE shipping on the buy it now. Enjoy and enjoy and enjoy, and thank you.Tusen takk. We were able to find some information about Per Lysne, and have listed it here. Rosmaling started as an occupation in the early 1700’s. Winters were long and dark in Norway; rosmalers would trade room and board for painting the inside of a person’s home. This would often take the entire season. They would paint walls, furniture, tools, and dishes. The symbols were large and the colors were bright. This would cheer up the winter, and also camouflage the soot around the edges of the unvented rooms. Rosmaling often included words such as bible verses or proverbs, which served as moral reminders. Rosmaling was functional in terms of light and mood, and also instructional. With the passage of time and the advent of the fireplace rosmaling went from being a profession to being a folk art. Rosmaling reached its peak during the 1850’s, and died out significantly during the Great Depression, when people could no longer afford it. Rosmaling did not come back to popularity until after WWII when Per Lysne, a Norwegian-American rosmaler, decided to try to sell some of his work to earn extra cash. Interest in the art form developed in the US and then, in turn, rekindled an interest in Norway. In Norway, primarily men did rosmaling, whereas in the US it has been taken up by women. Per Lysne’s grandson lives in New Mexico.   NEW INFORMATION FROM A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF MINE WHO KNEW THIS PAINTER PERSONALLY AND WAS IN HER HOME MANY YEARS AGO, FROM HER , THESE WORDS: Do you have the book Rosemaling in the Upper Midwest?  If you do, you can find info on "Solhaug" on pages 29 and 31-- Her name is Eleanor Ericson ----- but for whatever reason she signed all her things "Solhaug"----- she never indicated why to me.  She learned the basics of OS painting from Per Lysne although it was pretty much "his own" style ----she learned a few things during the time he was there  painting her kitchen cupboards for a few weeks.    She then went on to develop her own style and as the book says, sold thousands of decorated plates, etc. in the 1930's and 1940's all over the U.S.            As I told you, she was the designer of all the prints used by Bergquist on their metalware in her own swedish style.    I would say that the decoration on the candle holders is not swedish but rather her own style of OS.   DARLENE AGAIN HERE, HOPE THIS HELPS YOU, ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE EMAIL ME.
