It was never used by still is the natural wood. It is a large size, at 4 1/4" square, and 4 3/4" to the top of the peak on the top of the mold. It all is held together with one large pin and can open flat and comes apart for cleaning. You could also use just one piece for a cookie press if you wanted.  We purchased this from a Norwegian lady who had just returned from Norway. It really is a wonderful piece of folk art and if you chose not to use it for butter, it is amazing to look at as a piece of true Norwegian folk art. You will love this but oh my, think of the compliments you would get if this were used to make a large piece of butter look like a work of art, you would be the true hostess! enjoy and please email any questions.
