This is an early 19th century copy of the famous original done by Velazquez from aprox: 1656-57. Velazquez was a painter of Spanish nobility portraiture. The painting is in very good condition and is in what is very possibly the original frame. There appears to be no damage or repairs on the front of the painting, but there are 3 small, very old patches on the back of the canvas. I have taken photos of these for you to view. The painting of the subject is wonderful and looks very close to  the original. It was quite common in the early part of the 19th century for artist to copy the old masters. There is the number 15 stamped very faint on the back of the canvas as well as other writing in the shape of an oval that is so faded I can't make it out, but it appears to be either French or Spanish. I purchased the painting over 20 years ago from an antique dealer. Sotheby's or/and Christie's has auctioned several of these 19th century copies of old masters in the past few years. A few years ago we took a magnifying glass and found 1830 stamped on the back of the canvas, but I can not find where I saw it. It is possible that it was under the frame. The painting needs to be cleaned and I have never had it cleaned. I can not find a signature, but it is possible there could be one when cleaned. A magnificent addition to any collection. The painting measures aprox.: 29" long by 25" wide in the frame. The frame is a gorgeous gold gilt wooden frame that appears to be original.     Place a Bid!
