Description
Auction description Flemish Old Master 1700: Wonderful Old Master Drawing, Mythology The subject of this outstanding, delightful Old Master drawing by a Flemish or Dutch artist working ca 1700 is drawn from Greek and Roman mythology. We see the goddess Venus visiting her former husban Vulcan, god of fire. She wants Vulcan to forge armor for her warrior son, Aeneas -- you can see the coat of armor in the lower foreground. In this version of the legend, Venus has brought a couple of semi-nude nymphs to help her out as Vulcan stands by passively. One nymph is blowing on Vulcan's forge, and another is rifling through his treasure chest -- two symbolic violations of Vulcan's power and masculinity. This drawing is chock full of wonderful detail. On the left, there is another scene, probably Venus making herself beautiful in order to seduce Vulcan. On the right, an Italianate landscape view of a castle and lake. The attribution of this drawing from the Cabinet de Bayser of Paris is to Jan Goere (1670-1731). It's noted as such on the back of the frame. Its provenance is the Chavaillon collection, dispersed May 21, 2003 at Chatellerault, France and recorded in the artprice.com database. So you have a good pedigree for it. In addition I personally guarantee this drawing as an original Northern European work, circa 300 years old. This drawing was executed in pen and brown ink, gray wash, and red wash, all these elements superbly handled in a small space. Dimensions are about 5.75 inches by 7 inches (sight). Condition appears very good indeed. The simple but beautiful antique frame that houses the drawing measures about 9 inches by 11 inches. It is, in and of itself, a desirable antique, worth I estimate circa $200-250 in today's market. It's 18th century, in neo-classical Louis XVI style. An unusually fine work within the ebay universe, and an oustanding opportunity for the right collector/connoisseur.
