Description
Orig. Signed Pastel Canada Nat'l Gallery Cleland '06 This auction allows you to make any offer you deem appropriate and then gives me the option to accept it or return a counter offer for which you can accept or deny.   The Buy it Now price I arrived at is an estimate based on research I have done for the artist, age and condition of the piece which is excellent.  Feel free to ask questions and/or make a bid! ***************************   This beautiful, original pastel was created by Canadian artist Mary Alberta Cleland (1876-1960) who studied at the Art Association under William Brymner and then in Europe. Two of her many works, including a pastel, are in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.  From research several years ago, several of her works had sold at a Sotheby's.   Ms. Cleland was my Great Aunt and this portrait is of my father's sister, Helen and her doll, "Goldie".   The portrait is signed and dated. Taped to the back are stickers from previous shows where the piece was not for sale.  The actual pastel is 14 x 15".  With the frame it is 19 1/2 X 20 1/2". The pastel is under glass, sealed, where it has been since its creation.  The frame is beautiful but has a few pieces missing. (see photos)   Known for florals, landscapes and portraits, Alberta painted flowers she had grown in her garden, places she was familiar with, and friends and family with talent excellent, versatile, and ageless.  She grew rare and exotic plants, and also designed and made her own hooked rugs and even designed her home in Cushing. The family picture included in this listing shows Ms. Cleland's family... with 6 girls!   Interestly enough, she is 2nd from the left, the one with the obvious dreamlike (creative?) expression.  (My grandmother, and mother of Helen, is 3rd from the left.) Whomever wins this auction will also receive a biography with other interesting details of the artist.    * The Buy it Now "estimate" may be a bit exaggerated but the technique is brilliant and subject of this portrait is special, timeless and universal. * Feel free to write with any questions.   And consider adding me to your favorites list…  Thank you for looking. Shipping AND Handling  Please keep in mind, shipping includes cost of time, gas, labor, stamps, envelopes, bubble wrap, packing tape, etc to ship your item.
