Description
John Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was born in Pelham Manor, New York and lived most of his life in New York City. He was an illustrator and painter who is best known for creating the "I Want You" poster of Uncle Sam in World War I -- this is perhaps one of the best known iconic American images in history. He studied in England and in Paris and exhibited professionally as a young man. He sold his first illustration to St. Nicholas magazine when he was only 12 years old. At fourteen, he went to work for Life Magazine. He also created the beautiful and iconic "Flagg girl". He illustrated many books and magazines and his paintings and drawings were numerous. His work is exhibited in museums throughout the nation, including the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Flagg was also a popular socialite and party-goer. He was constantly sketching friends, celebrities and politicians and always surrounded by beautiful models and other socialites. This Flagg portrait of a woman we have for sale in this auction is probably a fellow party-going socialite. She is quite lovely and posed in profile. It is painted in charcoal and pencil signed. This brilliant image appears to have been painted from life, with the subject sitting for the portrait -- it is painted on heavy board backed paper. It was most likely done in the 1920s. Flagg portraits of this type are the quintessential Flagg image -- he loved Women and loved to paint portraits of the upper crust women of the day. This woman, with her tightly curled bobbed hairdo and classical profile, is the quintessence of the Flagg portrait. It is just the thing to add to a collection of Flagg's work or of portraiture of this era. It is signed in the bottom portion of the paper and this is Flagg's known signature. (see photo). Please note it is framed in a lucite box frame (how it ended up in a frame like this we'll never know!). We will ship it in this frame help protect it but you'll most likely want to re-frame it. Age c1920s Dimensions It measures 11" X 14". Condition Good condition. No spots, no foxing, no watermarks. The dark part you see in the left part of the picture is some flaking and rough spots at the edge of the artist board. This would be covered when this portrait is properly matted and framed. The plastic box frame is in good shape although it does not do this Flagg portrait justice.
