Description
Hello and thank you for taking time to view this auction. Up for sale is an original oil painting by Royal British Artist Charles Low, entitled Ling Field, Surrey, signed and dated 1882.. This is a highly detailed oil painting of Ling Field showing some chickens, a farmer, a horse buggy, duck pond, and some neat architecture. This painting comes with what appears to be the original ornate gilded frame. The frame is wood and plaster (gold leaf? ) and in excellent condition. The canvas itself measures 24 x 36 inches. The last photo is a drawing representing the signature seen in photo number five. Charles had worked the signature into the brush and twigs so it is hidden until you look up close. Most of his later paintings I saw on the web were signed C LOW. This is a very early painting in his career and it is signed C LOW but he has stacked the initials atop one another and added the date to the right and left. Charles Low was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (see the Wiki) He exhibited his work at the society and also at other royal academies and society's of artists such as the Walker Art Gallery in London , etc. You may possibly be able to get info from Albert & Victoria's Museum where the records for the RBA is kept as to where this painting was exhibited. It has several tags on the back, probably from one or more of the exhibitions. The brass tag on the front reads, Ling Field, Surrey Charles Low. The paper tag on back of the canvas frame reads: No, 1 Ling Field, Surrey, Charles Low Bridge St. Hungerford Berkshire. So it appears that this may be Charles Low's first painting of Ling field. He moved to Hungerford in 1881 so the date of 1882 next to his signature makes sense and matches the paper tag. This is a beautiful painting but it does need to be cleaned. There is a spot up top to the right of the clock tower in the sky that was cleaned and it is much brighter than the rest of the painting. It needs some restoration work, the paint is cracked from age as is typical of a 126 year old painting. There is a light scratch to the right of the rooster you can see in the photo, that needs retouched and tiny specks of paint loss here and there. As you can see in the photo of the back, there is a one inch crease/ stretch to the canvas but does not show any paint loss and did NOT tear through. It is really in exceptional condition for being in it's original state. Some of his other paintings have auctioned in the past at Sotheby's and Bonhams, etc. This one is much, much larger than most we could find reference to, and looks to be the a No 1, first in a series. If you have any questions or require additional pictures, please email and we will do our best to accommodate. This is being sold for an associate, from his mother's estate. She has been passed for several years and now he is finally ready to let go of the painting. Buyer to pay only by Cashiers or Official Check in U.S. Dollars. The painting will then be shipped after the check clears the bank. Buyer to pay shipping, packaging, and insurance. The shipping will done professionally at a local packaging center and we will get you a shipping quote if desired. Again, all questions welcomed and encouraged.Good luck and thank you for your bid, James
