Description
BARYE, ANTONIE LOUIS (1796-1875) FRENCH He was the greatest animal sculptor of all time and his father of the animalier school. He was born in Paris 24 September 1796 Antoine Louis studied classical sculptor Baron Francois Joseph Bosio and painter Gros. From (1818 to 1823) he attended EBA winning a second prize. From (1823 to 1831) he worked under the goldsmith Fauconnier practiced modeling in his spare time. In 1832, he established his own studio. He study the living animals at the J ardin des Plantes and preserved specimens and skeletons in the Mus`ee d Anatomic Comparee In 1848 he became the director of plaster casting at the Louve and from 1854 master of zoological drawing in the Mus`ee d Histoire. In the Salon of 1883, He won his first medal at the Prix de Roma 1819. His first was his tiger at the Salon in 1831 he won second prize for his work. In 1855 he received LHO and became a member of the in the Institute de France. He went on to win several awards. He was a very prolific sculptor. His work is in many museums and countless collections. He is a well-listed artist and in many publications. This bronze is illustrated in the bronze book titled (Animals in bronze by Christopher Payne) number c19; tilted (Panther of India) This is his more famous model of the series, with the accentuated thick neck with the earlier style of base to the previous model. These original mold casts vary a great deal for this popular model. This popular model from the late 19th c. and early 20th c. The age of the bronze is late 19thc. / Circa 1900. The bronze is signed inscribed Barye front left side. The bronze and the patination are beautiful finely detailed cat and in excellent condition. The patination is a bark brownish /black. The black white veined marble base was added later. To attach the marble base to the bronze plaster was poured into a potion of the cavaty and a hole was drilled and tap for threads into the plaster to screw the base to the bronze. The plaster can be removed if you perfer no marble base. The marble based shows age on the bottom and around the bottom edges VERY minor chips. The Approx. Size of the bronze with out the base is (5 1/4 inches in height) by (10 1/2 inches in length) The Approx. Size with the base is (7 inches in height) by (12 1/4 inches in length) by 4 3/4 in width.
