CONDITION: Excellent condition with richly saturated color through engobe printing, and pristine markings on the reverse. DISCUSSION: Uncharacteristic and rare, this piece contains Picasso's hand signature on the reverse. A remarkably detailed image of a beautiful and mysterious woman, this piece maintains the beautifully saturated black engobe printing and pristine markings on the reverse. Created in 1964, this red earthenware clay plaque, contains a guaranteed authentic 'Empreinte Originale de Picasso' and 'Madoura Plein Feu' Stamps on the reverse. Incised numbering 22/100 on the reverse. This work is in excellent condition with richly saturated color through engobe printing, and pristine markings on the reverse. Close friend and fellow ceramicist Alain Ramie records Picasso's ceramic inspiration came from his first visit to the annual potter exhibition in Vallauris, France in 1946. Picasso was overwhelmed by the creative possibilities offered by the clay medium, and for a period of approximately 20 years, Picasso worked furiously, expressing his creative genius through a variety of ceramic mediums. All works made during this period were marked with the Madoura stamp, and specialized Picasso stamps; however, Picasso did not generally hand sign these pieces. Little Bust of Woman is remarkable because it does possess Picasso's direct hand signature in black across the reverse. Further, the work is remarkably beautiful, as Picasso incises careful detail to construct the figure's delicate face, voluminous hair, and subtle expression. Framing begins with linen wrapped wooden liners that securely hold the ceramic and allow visibility in the back (to view signature and markings). A contemporary and elegant varnished silvery-bronze leaf frame encases the wood liners. The delicate coloration of the wood moulding perfectly compliments the gentle texture and color within the terracotta. A secure picture wire is attached to the frame to ensure a secure hanging.
