Description
About the print: After Pablo Picasso LA FAMILLE DES SALTIMBANQUES Soft-ground etching printed in black on light tan chine applique, circa 1950, signed lower right and numbered lower left 127/300 in orange crayon, on Japan nacre, published by Crommelynck, Paris and with their blindstamp, pale lightstain, minor soiling in the margins and verso, light watermarkings in margins, some handling creases, a few pressure marks in the outer margins, otherwise in very good condition, with full margins. Blindstamp of printer/publisher in lower left margin. 19 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches; 495 x 419 mm. Sheet 30 x 22 1/8 inches; 762 x 562 mm. Crommelynck Brothers were commisioned to make a print of this drawing that was in a very deteriorated state from the artist's collection of a pencil drawing done in Paris circa 1906 that was titled "circus performers". It was several pieces of small paper glued together in an irregular shape with severe foxing and paper loss throughout. The Crommelynck brothers made several prints after original works for Picasso (as well as many other renowned artists of the day) and these works are highly sought after by galleries and collectors and sell for tens of thousands. These are not the cheap mass produced lithos, posters or bookplates. Their production is overseen by Picasso to his specifications as are all of his fine art prints. They are seen like his ceramics and tapestries where the edition is not original but of a work Picasso wanted to be remade. Jaques Villon also made prints of other works such as the Saltimbanque "after Picasso" which regularly sells for up to $30,000. Henri Deschamps was another printer/artist that remade works of other artists for the artist and these works are highly sought after. Here is another "after Picasso" that the Crommelynck brothers made for the artist: http://www.artbrokerage.com/art/picasso/picasso_8957.htm As you can see many galleries do not even list these prints as being after the master. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.rogallery.com/_RG-Images/Picasso/Picasso-Saltinbanques.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.rogallery.com/Picasso/_picasso-hm-original-graphics-1.htm&h=100&w=86&sz=2&hl=en&start=14&um=1&tbnid=qozoXjyNmUTmGM:&tbnh=82&tbnw=71&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpicasso%2Bfamille%2Bsaltimbanques%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN http://cgi.ebay.com/Picasso-Pablo-Signed-Soft-ground-etching-c-1950_W0QQitemZ260232686641QQihZ016QQcategoryZ360QQcmdZViewItem About the period: The prolific catalogue of work produced by Picasso during his lifetime is usually placed into overlapping phases known as periods, each with an individual style and technique. The universally popular Blue Period is followed by Picasso’s Rose Period, which lasts from 1905 to 1906. A light palette dominated with pinks and flesh coloured hues characterizes this phase of artistic creativity. The tone of Picasso's work during the Rose Period has a more delicate nature and greater lyricism than it's sombre predecessor. The subject matter is often drawn from circus life including a multitude of images of clowns, traditional saltimbanques and harlequins. Picasso drew inspiration for this body of work from performances of the Cirque Médrano, a circus that the artist attended frequently near his residence and studio in Montmartre. At this time Picasso’s colourful Parisian studio attracted the major figures of the avant-garde scene, including Matisse, Braque, Apollinaire, and Gertrude Stein. This environment encouraged the depiction of social outsiders and their experiences of alienation from conventional society, which became a common thread running through the work produced by Picasso in the Rose Period. During 1905 Picasso began painting fleshier, more robust figures, a style that caught the interest of writer Gertrude Stein, and her brother Leo. The two went on to become the most important patrons of Picasso in his artistic endeavours. The prolific painter had already produced numerous engravings of great power and began his impressive work in sculpture during the years of the Blue and Rose Periods.Fine examples from the Rose period include Woman in a Chemise (1904-05), Harlequin Family (1905), Harlequin's Family With an Ape (1905), La Famille de Saltimbanques (1905), and La Toilette (1906). Artist Biography: Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1974) was a spanish artist whose name is almost synonymous with 20th century art. No artist was ever as famous as Picasso was in his own lifetime, or has been since. The controversies over his personality, arrogance, affairs with younger women, and unwillingness to be classified in the art world only added to his fame. And without a doubt Picasso was a true genius - able to create incredibly complex and powerful paintings with a few strokes of the brush, or capture the essence of someone's face from many different angles all at once. Most of all Picasso was an individualist. He was a founder of art movements, such as Cubism, but paradoxically refused to do what other people did, and whenever the art world caught up with him and thought they knew what to expect, he would change completely and surprise them. A child prodigy, Picasso was as skilled in realist portraits as in expressionist symbolism. He was also incredibly proficient, especially near the end of his life, when he would often complete three paintings in one day. It was as if he believed he could delay his death through painting. At the time many of these works were dismissed, in the words of Douglas Cooper, as "the incoherent scribblings of a frenetic old man". It wasn't until long after picasso's death that critics took a new look at his later works and realized that Picasso had invented neo-expressionism and was, as usual, decades ahead of his time. Pablo Ruiz y Picasso showed artistic ability at an early age, and when he began to study art seriously in Barcelona and Madrid, he was already a skilled painter. In the early 1900s he visited and eventually settled in Paris, where he was part of a vibrant artistic community that included Gertrude Stein. Although greatly influenced by other artists in Europe and beyond, Picasso was inventive and prolific, and early in his career earned a worldwide reputation as an innovator. Along with Henri Matisse, he is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His enormous body of work spans so many years that art experts generally separate his career into distinct phases, such as the Blue Period, the Rose Period and his most famous contribution to modern art, Cubism. Picasso, unlike so many before him, was an international celebrity as well as an important contributor to the world of art. Shipping: Item will ship unframed in either flat or tube packing.
