This is a beautiful and rare piece. This is full-bodied rooster figure viewable from all sides. It is sculpted from metal which is magnetic. I believe that this may have been a trade sign adornment for a country feed store or a rural restaurant. I don't think it could have been any part of a weather vane because of the weight and size. The comb, feathers and tongue of the rooster are so distinctive. The gold patina has almost a copper lustre hue bordering on a gold leaf look though it is not gold leaf. The rooster sits on a wood and plaster gesso base. There is a sculpted formed metal plated below the rooster's feet and on top of the wood ball. This piece was owned by a man for decades who is now deceased. I don't know anything about the age or origin. A few years back there was a metal folkart rooster on the Antiques Roadshow that was appraised very high. The detail on this rooster appears to be so much more striking. This piece is in VERY GOOD condition. It does show wear from use. The plaster over the wood on the ball and square base is partially chipped away as shown in the images. There is a large piece of plaster missing from the wood ball base. There is a very little bit of corrosion on the back of the rooster's head. I did not try to clean this piece. I will leave that to the new owner. The rooster, itself, really has no damage that I can see. The piece measures about 38" tall x 23" front to back. The rooster figure is about 28" tall.
