tedgetzel Store OWN A PIECE OF NEW YORK'S HISTORY A MAGNIFICENT AQUATINT ENGRAVING OF NEW YORK CITY IN 1846, BY THE MASTER ENGRAVER HENRY A. PAPPRILL New York The North West  Angle of Fort Columbus, Governor's Island   VIEW (NEW YORK CITY.) Catherwood-Papprill View. Hand-colored aquatint view, The print itself measures 32" by 23';  with the an antique frame it measures 36" by 27.25". New York: Megarey, [1846] Lovely copy, with vibrant, unfaded colors of this extremely rare print. Condition of the is fine with only the lightest toning visible in the margins.  The margins are full and untrimmed.The print was engraved by Papprill after a sketch by Frederick Catherwood. Catherwod had made his name sketching the ancient ruins of Yucatan and Chiapas in Mexico. Stoke recognizes two states of the print, one with an imprint and the other without. This is the first  (UNDATED) state of the print. See Stokes III: pages 697-98. Henry A. Papprill (1816 - 1903 ) Noted as an aquatint engraver from 1840. His plates were published from 1840 till 1883.Born in Holborn - London. Lived for much of his life at Wharton Street, Llyod Square, London is thought to have been based in New York for brief period in the mid 1840s. His work in the USA appears to classify him as an American engraver but he was based and gained his reputation and bulk of his work in England. He produced a series of works for Ackermann & Co from 1840 beginning with four plates called "The Jolly Squire", with verses, after James Pollard. In the following years Papprill engraved a number of military plates for Ackermann as well a series of engravings of New York (1846-9) for H.I.Megarey (published in New York). The most notable of these are: "The North West Angle of Fort Columbus, Governor's Island" (the Catherwood-Papprill view) and New York from the Steeple of St. Paul's Church, Looking East, South & West." (The Hill-Papprill view) listed in the American Historical Prints - Early Views of American Cities, etc: I.N.Phelps Stokes & Daniel C. Haskell. New York Public Library 1932. Frederick Catherwood (February 27, 1799 – September 27, 1854) was an English artist and architect best remembered for his meticulously detailed drawings of the ruins of the Maya civilization. He explored Mesoamerica in the mid 19th century with writer John Lloyd Stephens. Their books, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán and Incidents of Travel in Yucatán, were best sellers and introduced to the western world the civilization of the ancient Maya.
