Advertising posters, almost all original lithographs by artists of the last hundred years were used to sell everything from food and liquor, to entertainment. The collecting of posters started with the first distribution of posters that were sought out from the artists and printers by art dealers who believed they could be sold to their customers. Some went so far as to remove them from the walls. (It must be remembered that most of the posters were originally produced in editions that numbered in the hundreds, and sometimes in the thousands.) Few survived in their original state having been ripped off of the walls and often discarded. The lithographers stones did not normally survive past their first printing. The value of vintage poster art has risen a steady 10 percent a year over the past decade. It is the combination of rarity of a poster, condition, artist and the image itself that will determine the final selling price. Vintage poster art is a wonderful and still quite reasonable way to collect beautiful, original art. The popularity of the antique images has grown enormously in the past 15 years and they are becoming increasingly rare.
