Description
"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough" Robert Capa Here is a pair of spectacular vintage original news service photos dated January of 1948 and taken by the legendary photojournalist ROBERT CAPA... (Budapest, October 22, 1913 – May 25, 1954) Capa was an acclaimed 20th century combat photographer who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. A Russian Journal, published by John Steinbeck in 1948, is an eyewitness account of his travels through the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War era. Accompanied by the distinguished war photographer Robert Capa, Steinbeck set out to record the real attitudes and modes of existence of people living under Soviet rule. Being journalists, they were suspicious of the aggressive propaganda employed by their own American media and by the gradually increasing atmosphere of paranoia towards Russia, which portrayed the Communist peoples as robotic, fanatical and militaristic. This literary and photographic record of life under Stalin's rule is a valuable historical document. Steinbeck and Capa describe Russians living in extremely different conditions than those in the reports disseminated by the Western powers of the day: life in the cities and the country appears peaceful and very similar to that of other peoples in Europe at the time. Without diminishing the totalitarian nature of Stalin's regime, Steinbeck discovered that the main fear held by average Russians was not of Stalin but another World War. These splendid RARE photos have survived the last six decades and remain in wonderful condition, one has been slightly trimmed by a news room editor (typical in vintage news service photographs) but the 6 3/4 x 9 1/8 image itself remains basically unaffected and presents in near pristine condition while also displaying exceptional contrast and clarity. The other photo remains in its original state and size (8 x 10) and has a few minute surface flaws that take nothing away from this historic photograph and remains a magnificent example. BOTH of these important images were deemed significant enough to be given a whole page unto themselves in John Steinbeck's 1948 book... "A Russian Journal"... listed on page 63 and 77 (see scans). This FIRST EDITION apparent unread book is the perfect companion piece for these tremendous photos and IS INCLUDED with this auction ! These are TYPE 1 original photos as they DO NOT illuminate under a black light and has been examined under a 100x microscope and are clearly first generation vintage photographs printed from the original negative at or near the time they were taken and are GUARANTEED to be determined as such by PSA/DNA Photo Authentication or you will receive a FULL REFUND.
