Description
I am pleased to offer to your attention an original signed painting made by famous German artist Ernst Oppler. Material: oil on canvas mounted on plywood. Ernst was a highly accomplished painter and etcher whose depictions of the Imperial Russian Ballet are especially well-known today. Measures approx. 44 x 58 cm (17¼ by 22¾ inches). Very good condition. Ernst Oppler was born in Hannover in 1867 into a Jewish middle-class family well known in the artistic circles of Germany. His father Edwin Oppler was the architect of the synagogues in Hannover and Hameln (among others). Ernst Oppler spent his student years in Munich, London and Holland where he painted elegant portraits of the gentry in subdued tones. In 1905 he settled in Berlin. As a member of the Berliner Secession, he developed into a sought-after portraitist and from 1912, through his drawings and graphic works, to one of the most significant German artistic chroniclers of ballet history. OPPLER became fascinated with the Imperial Russian Ballet after its brilliant emergence in Western Europe. He followed and caught their every movement by sketching them night after night in the darkened theatre with a broad lighted pencil - one of the first of its kind - transferring these impressions at home in his studio to copper plates and into pastels and oils. Ernst was an impressionist painter of portraits, interiors, landscapes and etchings in the early 20th century,. His works are in the collections of many museums Germany, the United States, and Israel including the National Gallery in Berlin, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, and the Modern Gallery in Venice. These magnificent works are part of the Brevard Museum of Art & Science’s permanent collection through a generous donation from Ernst OPPLER’s great niece Susan WOOD. , Died in 1929, Berlin Thanks for looking and remember a combined purchase saves you on shipping.
