Norm parents had an artistic background i.e. his father [professional photographer] and mother [fine landscape water colour painter] Norm’s break into newspapers began in 1932 first as “Copy Boy” at NSW’s “Smith’s Weekly” newspapers, then began a 4 year cadetship in Smith’s Weekly Art dept doing small illustrations, lettering, gags, retouching photographs etc. During the War 11, served with the Army Service Corps Transport Unit as a driver/ mechanic and saw active service both in Darwin and in Asia In 1949, Norm was offered a job by Sir Keith Murdock for the “News”, Adelaide as a cartoonist and worked for them for over 30 years. During this time he had cartoons in not only the “News” but other interstate and overseas magazines and newspapers eg Washington Post. Norm also won the “Walkley Award” in 1975 for the best newspaper cartoon in Australia. Each morning he started work at 6.30 am reading all the news items.
