PLEASE CLICK HERE TO LOOK AT MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR MORE GREAT ESTATE FINDS Artist: Robert ColescottSize:24" x 74"Medium: Oil on CanvasEarly Fountain Gallery labelSigned lower left "R. Colescott" The canvas is mounted on a stretcher without any adjustment keys so therefore there is some flagging to the canvas that would be expected of a painting of this age in the situation. It certainly could benefit from a cleaning however it still views wonderfully in its present state. There is overall light crazing to the canvas but no where the paint has started to lift. There are also a couple of areas of light denting to the canvas particularly where it has rested against the center stretcher bar. Overall I would call its condition good to very good but as I say the painting is absolutely incredible to look at even in its present, less then perfect state. While not from the Oregon area Colescott spent many years here painting and exhibiting. As a result he is considered an important part of the Oregon scene and his paintings are held in many important collections both private and public around the world. His work is in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts; Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and the Portland Art Museum just to name a few.Robert Colescott was "the" artist chosen to represent the United States at the 47th Venice Biennale. A catalog, "Robert Colescott: Recent Paintings", with an essay by Miriam Roberts, was published by the U.S. Government in 1997.In recent years his prices have started to soar with his paintings bringing as much as 93.000.00.Colescott was born in Oakland, California, and attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned both his B.A. (1949) and his M.A. degrees (1952). He studied in Paris in 1949 and 1950 with French artist Fernand Léger, who urged him to avoid abstraction, a form of art that Léger considered too remote from the interests of most people. Nevertheless, in his early career Colescott explored both abstract and representational painting and was strongly influenced by the figurative paintings of artists of the San Francisco Bay area such as Joan Brown and Richard Diebenkorn. He has become a controversial artist because he uses exaggerated, even stereotyped, images of blacks in his paintings. He uses satirical themes as shocking social commentary, particularly in his parodies of classic European paintings with minstrel-like black characters. Now, an older artist, "Mr. Colescott continues to produce vitally significant work which has become more and more biting, provocative and, at times, even savage. No one has been more important as a role model for a younger generation of African-American artists exploring the relationship between the self and the impediments of its realization. In this way, he has created one of the most powerful bodies of work in recent American art, employing a highly personal brand of narrative figuration laced with enough irony to expose the still on-going racial inequity of our culture. After living in Cairo, Egypt, Colescott returned to America and the West Coast, where he played a part in the revival of figurative painting in the 1960s. In the mid-1970s, he began using images from popular culture and making racial parodies of masterpieces from art history which presaged the emergence of "appropriation" in the 1980s.The artist received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985, and was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design, New York City, in 1999. A teacher at the University of Arizona, Tucson, he is now Regents' Professor Emeritus of Art there. He was a visiting lecturer at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
