Description
British Brass Rubbings Jackson Delmarco's Description Original Rubbings by: Paul and Brenda Corbould Chittlehem Holt Devon (England) These authentic English Brass Rubbings consist of stories of actual people with a fantastic history concerning their lives. Their stories are told in two frames. Frames are worn but authentic. This pictorial story is scripted on the back of the frame: The Rolle brasses at Petrockstowe, Devon These two brasses dated 1591 to Henry and Margaret Rolle and their nineteen children are in the village church at Petrocktowe near Hatherleigh. The church retains its 14th century tower and North arcade and its font 1300. Henry Rolle lived at Henton Barton near Petrocktowe. The Rolles were great landowners in Devon from Tudor to Victorian times. Their main seat was at Stevenstone near St Giles in the Wood. The Rolles introduced brick building to Devon and many of there farm houses are still to be seen. Stenenstone originally built in 1539 was reconstructed in 1868. Today only the outbuildings remain and three have been converted into terraces of attractive flats round a grass covered close. The left brass shows Henry Kneeling at a desk with his sons ranged behind him. The right brass depicts Margaret with her daughters. The inscription says there were nineteen children but a count of heads reveals only eighteen; the nineteenth is indicated by a skull. A scroll coming from Margaret’s mouth says, ``My children feare the Lord`` Is this an admonition to the children Or is it a smug statement of their piety or it may even be an exclamation at the number of her offspring.
