Sam Francis (1923-1994) was born in San Mateo California and is of the most renown California and American artist of the 20th Century. "His work reflects these diverse influences: Oriental philosophy has led him to the mandala form, while Western science inspired biomorphic imagery." DETAILS: This large screenprint is referenced in "The Prints of Sam Francis, A Catalogue Raisonne 1960-1990," by Lembark, Volume II, pages 170-171. This large print measures 30" x 22" (76.2x55.9). The edition is 114, plus miscellaneous proofs. This print is signed and numbered in pencil, 55/114, and printed on paper: PTI #120 Waterleaf. The print was published by Sam Francis, Santa Monica, California, 1988 and commissioned by Crossroads School, Santa Monica, California. The screens were hand-drawn by the artist with tusche. Sam Francis' Publisher Chop is in the lower right corner. I have photographed it from the back side for easier distinction. The print has been properly stored in an acid free sleeve in a smoke free environment for years. Because of the 6 layers of gloss ink, the print needs to be shipped in a large shipping tube.
