Original oil in canvas by Ernest Etienne Narjot ( 1826 - 1898 ): signed lower right - " E. Narjot 1885 ": canvas/image size: 30 inches by 20 inches: ( 76.5 X 51cm ): inscribed in pencil on the upper stretcher bar/verso " 1885 ". ( framed ). A fine example of the scarce work of this important painter from his best period. It is likely that this was among  favorite works of Narjot because he dated the oil which was not usually the case.  Narjot was born in St. Malo, France with the full name of Ernest Etienne Narjot and was raised in Paris by artist parents.  He received formal art training there but was distracted from that pursuit by his interest in gold mining, which lured him to America.He was part of the California Gold Rush of 1849 but was unsuccessful.  For thirteen years, he was with a mining expedition to Mexico and painted mining and landscapes along the Arizona border.  He also married a Mexican woman, Santos Ortiz.By 1865 Narjot settled in San Francisco where he established a studio on Clay Street and painted landscapes, narrative, mythological and symbolist oils, portraits, and sketches of gold miners and Indians. He aslo painted murals and frescoes for churches and public buildings.  By the 1880s, Narjot was considered one of California's foremost painters and also illustrated books of early California life. His works, especially from the 1880s, have been compared to those of his friends, the fellow painters, William Keith and Arthur Mathews. In the 1880s and 90s Narjot served as Professor of Art at the California School of Design and the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco. A major achievement in his career was the commission to decorate the ceiling of Leland Stanford's tomb. While working on this project, he splashed paint in his eye which later led to blindness.In spite of his great talent, Narjot died impoverished, and many of his works were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.  His wife was forced to sell cheaply many of his paintings to support their family, but many Bay Area artists helped the family with a benefit sale of their works including William Keith, Thomas Hill and Arthur Mathews.Narjot was a member of the San Francisco Art Association.  His works are in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley: the Anschutz Collection and the C.R. Smith Collection:( ref: Hughes: Artists in California: Who Was Who in American Art: Bancroft Archive ).NOTE: A smaller oil from the same year ( 1885 ), measuring 16 x 14 inches, " Two Miners " painted with similar rich dark color tones sold at Sotheby's, New York for $16,800 on 11/28/2001. Overall condition is very good, apart from some areas of old yellowing surface varnish, mainly in the sky and water: ( The work needs a light surface cleaning ): white spots and glare in my first two pictures and in my last picture are from varnish reflections only and flash glare and do not exist on the original.
