This is indeed an enigma, a mystery and a bit of a quandary.That is why we have held on to this piece for almost a decade, showing it to experts and evaluating it with various methods as our own expertise has grown.  We believe this is an original work of art, accomplished in ink with possibly with traces of pencil, on a heavy grade paper and later laid on a poster board thickness for protection.  We can’t account for the exceptional work or the artist, unfortunately, and we can’t dare to believe we have happened across a William Still, under magnification, we see fibers and errant lines of ink.  With the naked eye we see glossy reflection in areas from heavy application of charcoal.  We have handled and sold hundreds of lithos, engravings and prints over the years and this just simply isn’t like any of those.  The paper is not brittle—it is not an engraving or etching; you can observe the uneven edges in the images and there is no plate mark or indentation as one would find with such prints.
