WOW!!! This is a one of a kind, hand made ivory poker chip/card marker, fully loaded! Howard has never made one like this before, and it is unlikely there will be another one EXACTLY like it.  On the front side, we have preban elephant ivory and composite spiderweb malachite and a lovely nude is scrimshawed on the ivory. On the backside we have  composite russian lavender, and composite malachite with an ivory ace of spades playing card inlayed in the lavender and scrimmed.  The purple and green look AWESOME together! See pictures!!!! This is a NICE HEFTY CHIP with a really good feel to it.  It is about 1/4" thick, about twice the thickness of most poker chips Howard has made.  It is just over 1 1/2" across, and Howard signed and dated the scrimshawed side.  Although they are good pics, they do not do this piece justice. Sincerely, Howard Thomas This is the traditional sailors art form of scrimshaw. Scrimshaw literally means "idle time" and these types of things were made of ivory scraps on the long voyages in between whale spottings and usually given to loved ones on the return home. Each piece is signed and dated by my husband, Howard Thomas. Howard uses the stipple technique for amazing detail and its almost photo like in quality.Stippling is a series of thousands of little holes pressed into the ivory, instead of the more traditional scratching method. Sometimes he uses a combination of both methods. He uses a surgical steel needle in a pin vise and it is very tedious work. Stipple is used by many famous scrimshanders and it is a hard technique to master. Howard has been doing scrimshaw for over 20 years and first picked it up while in the navy aboard the USS Independence. Don't miss out on this one!
