Description
This is a Sir Edwin Landseer Lithograph, from an engraving by Samuel Cousins. "The Return From Hawking", In the Ellesmere Collection. "The central figures in this picture are portraits of Lord Francis Egerton,, afterwards first Earl of Ellesmere, his wife and their children. The pastime of hawking is now almost entirely discontinued, no nobleman of the present day would boast with Spenser's Sir Tristam........Sir Edwin Landseer has faithfully represented all the accessories of the sport; the falconer on the left holds the victor on his gloved hand, the "lease" hangs down, the proud high-spirited creature restless spreads her wings but is too well trained to attempt to escape. On the perch suspended from the keeper's shoulders are groups of fine birds patiently waiting to be taken to the "hack", the "pelt" they have "carried" is thrown carelessly on the ground, of little value now that the excitement of the chase is over. The pet dogs of the household and the master's favourite hounds seem wistfully to beg for notice, and to testify their interest in the pursuits of their owners. The nobel horses meekly bide their time, their work is done, they know they are at home again. In the distance we see the noble entrance gate of the Egerton mansion. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1837, and is now in the possession of the Ellesmere Family." Came from an estate antique auction. Age unknown to me. In good condition. Incredible detail! Overall dimensions: 14 1/2" x 10 1/4". Shipping weight: 12 oz. Media Mail
