Description
Thomas Hill painting, "Yosemite Falls in Winter." Initialed to lower left, "T.H." A spectacular Yosemite snowscape from one of the most famous landscape artists of the nineteenth century. Hill, who was born in England in 1829, immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager in 1844. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art with Peter Rothermel, and later painted in Massachusetts and New Hampshire with such artists as George Inness, Virgil Williams and Albert Bierstadt. Health problems drove Hill to seek a milder climate, and in 1871 he moved to San Francisco, where he became a founding member of the San Francisco Art Association. In Yosemite Valley he found the muse, Yosemite, that would propel his work for the rest of his life. From the 1870s until his death, he painted more than 5,000 Yosemite landscapes and exhibited from California to Paris. This piece depicts the valley covered in snow and cloaked in fog, Yosemite Falls distinctly visible in the background. The original wood frame compliments the painting's colors perfectly, and contains, to verso, several inscriptions carved by the artist; one inscription reads, "An impression from nature;" another, "Yosemite Falls in Winter, by Thomas Hill." Oil on canvas measures 20" x 14"; 25.75" x 20" framed. Fine condition. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.
