Description
bixleyheathnewyork Store For sale is this strange and incredible painting in the avant-garde style by listed artist, writer, adventurer Tobias Schneebaum. Original artwork signed & dated 1950. Excellent original frame (shadowbox style), old label on back reads: Raymond & Raymond NYC, well known art gallery during the mid-century showing the explosion of new, abstract, avant-garde artists.. His is an incredible story. Schneebaum studied painting with Rufino Tamayo at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He lived and painted in Mexico from 1947 > 1950 and was a member of the Yaddo Artist Residence in upstate NY in 1953. Schneebaum then went on to live among Peruvian Amazon tribes becoming involved by immersing himself in their traditions. He lived, loved and fought among tribes where ritualized homosexual relationships and cannibalism were practiced. Emerging from the jungle to write books, he recounted his experiences in the book 'Keep The River On Your Right, A Modern Cannibal Tale' and subsequent critically acclaimed film of the same name. He speaks frankly in the film about his own participation in these tribal rites. This is one of the few paintings of this artist we've found. The openly gay artist/painter/writer passed away on Sept. 26, 2005 in NYC. We'll be happy to furnish any other info/pics needed. Pls email us.
