Description
One Silver Cloud (1966) - also know as a Warhol silver pillow, signed by Merce Cunningham. This iconic work was produced by Warhol in 1966 for an exhibition at Leo Castelli's gallery in April of that year. Silver Clouds, as it was called, consisted in its entirety of a roomful of silver, metalized plastic pillow-shaped balloons inflated with helium and oxygen. In 1968 Jasper Johns, at the time in charge of sets and costumes for the Merce Cunnigham Dance Company approached Warhol to make a set and costumes for RainForest “When I approached Warhol to say that Merce would like him to design the décor for RainForest, Andy said, “Oh just take a lot of those [silver] pillows.” And I said, “What about the costumes? and he said, “Oh, they shouldn’t wear any clothes.” [Jasper Johns] There were costumes despite Warhol's suggestion (images of the Silver Clouds in a gallery and of RainForest are from the internet, and appear here to illustrate the history of the work). In the course of the last few decades the Warhol Foundation has reissued a limited number of these Silver Clouds for exhibitions in Museums, such as that at the Dublin Museum of Modern Art in 1994. In 2001 they produced a small number to be given to invited guests (no more than 200) at the benefit of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company during their season at City Center in New York, all of which were signed by Merce Cunningham. This piece is one of that limited number, it has never been inflated. The Mylar Silver Cloud measures approximately 36 inches x 51 1/2 inches flat. Please feel free to ask questions. Sorry, no returns.
