H. Carvens, author of the introduction to William Christenberry:  Sothern Photographs (1983), “the classicist, the pursuer of the simple beauty of form existing in the Southern landscape.”  Through his photography, Christenberry unites his extensive poetic documentation of the South, which also inclides painting and sculpture.   The Bar-B-Q-Inn, Greensboro, Alabama, 1976, created with a Brownie camera, has the distinctive quality of images that are produced by artists who use the Brownie.  It is also colorful, classical and hauntingly deserted.   Christenberry has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a commission from the U.S. General Services Administration.  In 1982 he received the Lyndhurst Foundation Prize, which honors writers and artists from the South.
