Well received during his lifetime, Thornley possessed a keen eye for capturing the hustle, vigor and atmosphere of seafaring london. Sailing ships at high speed breaking water, ships in choppy water, ships clustered and speeding to reflect busy commerce are favored subjects of Thornley. This painting is set at twilight, the ships are listless with one ship moored and a row boat in the foreground landed with occupants walking ashore thier women waiting reflecting the end of a seafaring day. His paintings were first exhibted in the British Royal Academy in 1859 and continued there through 1897, he also exhibeted at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, received honorable mention in 1881 and third place medal in 1888. This piece is signed W. Thornley with the T superimposed over the H, The right leg of the W is shown sharing the fore leg of the H. The canvas measures 16" by 10", In the original ornate wood and composite frame which measures 19" by 25" at it's outermost edges. The painting should be professionally cleaned and restored. The damage is noted as follows two pin holes only visible when held to a light at close distance, and two narrow worn spots these do not appear to be tears but the canvas is worn through these are approx. 3/8" long not visible from a distance when hung on the wall but visible within a few feet. The frame has several cracks has been repaired in several places and is missing some pieces showing its age. All quite restorable. This painting originates from a boston residence, made a gift to a retiring servant for years of good service. Inquires welcome.
