Description
A good looking early to mid eighteenth century bible box or writing desk in oak.It is likely English and dates to the time of the carving on front if not slightly earlier. It has a very nice old surface and one thing that sets this piece apart is it's great condition. The interior has three original draws, all with their original wooden pulls. The butterfly hinges are original and the engraved brass lockplate is a very old replacement that probably dates to the late eighteenth century. You can make out the shadow of the former lockplate behind it.There is also a shadow on the interor of the lid where the original wrought iron hasp sat but it is long gone. The lid has a carved molding on front and there is incised and punchwork decoration around the edges on the top and front. It is also initialed "L.M." and dated 1745 in carving on front. The base molding is all original and the box is constructed with hand cut nails, except for dovetailing on the front corners. The bottom is made from three tongue and groove pieces and the sides are made from two pieces while the back and lid are each made from one piece of wood. There is no real damage, just expected wear from use and there have been no repairs. The photos dont show the good color very well and it looks better in person. The box measures 25.5" wide,12" high and 17.5" deep.Shipping in the US will be 25.00
