All original paint in UNTOUCHED DRY FINISH and a wonderful patina on the hand made brass arts & crafts style hinges.  21" front to back X 16 3/4" wide X 10 1/2" tall.   All Wood WITH LOTS OF HAND PLANING MARKES EVERYWHERE.  Deep cherry red book with carved pages stepped just like the real thing painted in a realistic light gold/brown color.  Post 1860 early round head nail construction.  Elaborate brass hinges decorate the binding and across the top.   There is an old half hinge inside that holds the lid open.    Imagine a traveling book huckster in his buckboard wagon or buggy who most likely had this made or made it himself to show and sell children's books.  The kids would have gone wild when he opened this box which would have been full of comics and other books of the period.  That's one of the possibilities for uses for this unusual American Folk Art book box.  How do you think it might have been used?  THEY JUST DON'T GET ANY BETTER OR MORE UNUSUAL THAN THIS.  If you love American Country Painted Furniture, you should serioulsly consider this one.   Excellent all around condition with paint at 98%.  One person wrote and said they think this is a bible box used to store the family bible.  Never seen anything so intricately painted and decorate to hold a bible but that is a possiblity.  Have you ever seen a bible that is 20" X 16" X 10" thick???  If you want it to be a bible box, that's what it is.  It's a mighty big one whatever it was used for originally.
