Description
c1900 -LARGEFINE AMERICAN COCONUT STILL LIFE BY HUBACEK William Hubacek: Original oil on stretched canvas: circa 1900: canvas/image size: 36 inches by 24 inches: framed in its original ornate circa 1900 American frame: frame size is 42 1/2 inches by 30 1/2 inches: annotated verso in pencil - " Wm. Hubacek ".  One of America's most underrated Still Life painters, William Hubacek was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1871. He came to San Francisco by covered wagon as a child of five and began painting at age twelve. His art studies were at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco under Raymond Yelland, Arthur Mathews, and Amadee Joullin. Although he painted some landscape and marine paintings it is for his work in still life that he is best known. His academic training and beautifully structured compositions reflect the influence of his teachers, especially Joulin and the earlier European old master still life painters. Hubacek's first studio was in the family home in the Mission District at 823 York Street. After continuing his art training in France, Germany, and Italy, he returned to San Francisco and taught at the Mark Hopkins. A great portion of his earlier works was lost when his studio was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1906 which renders this early work especially collectable. In 1938 he moved down the San Francisco peninsula to town of San Bruno where he had a studio in his home at 241 San Luis Avenue. His many students from the surrounding area called him "The Old Master."   Hubacek is known to have painted several still life oils depicting coconuts, all in warm sienna and umber tones with his distinctive soft fethered brushstroke sienna backgrounds and softer edges to the fruits themselves, bringing his work more in the direction of atmospheric Impressionism. ( Although this work is typical of Hubacek, because it is unsigned I have given it an attribution to Hubacek. In my 35 years of collecting, I have owned several of his still life oils and I am very familiar with his style ). This large scarce early work is especially unusual because Hubacek shows all stages of the coconut growth. A member of the San Francisco Art Association, Hubacek exhibited at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition ( Chicago )1893: the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939: New York Worlds Fair: 1939: California Historical Society: San Francisco Art Association ( 1893-1906 ): California Mid-Winter International Expo ( 1894 ): Orange Co. Art Museum.
