Description
Kopel Gurwin: Banners on Biblical Themes KOPEL GURWIN, born in Vilna in 1923, was educated there at a center of Hebrew culture. His studies were interrupted by World War II forcing him to spend the war years in concentration camps. On being liberated he went to Sweden, where he stayed for five years, before immigrating to Israel in 1950. He completed his studies at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 1957 and has been actively associated with the field of graphic and artistic creation in Israel ever since. Although he did not start producing applique banners until 1966, this has now become his main form of artistic expression. The BANNERS are highly stylized compositions, mostly figurative and on Biblical themes, carried out in felt, appliqued (stitched) on coarse linen or woolen upholstery material, creating a mood of fabric painting. They customarily include a quotation from the Bible and the design makes use of the square Hebrew letter. The smooth felt material, the gentle yet vibrant color combinations and the even execution, form an ideal vehicle for the artist to express his deeply felt humanism and love of beauty, tempered by his strong respect for the exacting Jewish tradition and Western esthetic standards. The work of Kopel Gurwin frequently has a pastoral quality with his high decorative impact. In other examples of his work he injects a simple narrative with humor and strong symbolism. This Banner Measure's 44 inches wide by 74 inches in length. This banner was created in 1971
