Description
Exquisite masterpiece oil painting by William Merritt Chase. Small size measuring 11" x 13 1/4". Early impressionist work in barbizon style. The brush hand texture is well refined and tempered. Fine subtile use of pink colors in the sky. Works by Chase tend to be smaller and he has miniature tendancies that pay attention to unusually small details. This painting has distant figures under 1/2" in size with clothing and bodies well embellished by tiny dots of colors. Full W M Chase signature on the back that is perfectly correct in letter font handwriting, pigment color, and punctuation. Chase is one of the most significant and influential artist in American history. Somewhat the father of american impressionism. He painted a number of barbizon style landescapes some of which are shown below for comaprison and are not included in this sale. Biographies of the artist state Chase greatly admired a travelling exhibition of french art brought to NY in 1886 by Parisian art dealer Durand Ruel. Durand Ruel was noted for his representation of french Barbizon artists such as Jean Baptiste Corot. This painting by Chase looks very well like a work by Corot. Shown below is a Corot work titled "Ville D ' Avray" which hangs in the National Gallery. Earliest provenance research traces ownership back to 1890 parisian art dealer Bonjean. It is quite possible Durand Duel owned the artwork prior to Bonjean and had this painting in NY during the 1886 exibit. To what extent this can be proven by research is unknown but "Ville D' Avray" is the possible source of inspiration for this Chase painting. Condition is excellant. No repairs or restoration. No provenance research. Purchased from an average dealer in art and antiques who can be assumed knocked on the door of elite art markets and got the typical royal snub we have come to expect from those anal retentive gate keepers. No guarantees of authorship and sale is final. Buyer pays $20.00 mail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Signature from back of canvass.
